Renting a car in Montréal is refreshingly simple — as long as you show up with the right documents. Here’s the complete checklist of what you need to rent from U-Lease, and, just as importantly, what you don’t (spoiler: no credit card).

1. A valid driver’s licence

Every driver needs a valid driver’s licence. If you hold a Québec or Canadian licence, you’re all set. Visiting from abroad? Good news: the SAAQ lets you drive in Québec with a valid licence from your home country or state for up to six months. If your licence isn’t written in French or English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended — and some rental companies require one. (See the SAAQ’s rules for non-resident drivers.)

2. You must be at least 18

U-Lease rents to drivers 18 and older. Many big-name agencies set their minimum at 21 or even 25 and pile on “young driver” surcharges. At U-Lease, if you’re 18 with a valid licence, you can rent — no age premium.

3. A security deposit — but no credit card required

This is where U-Lease is different. Most rental counters demand a credit card and freeze several hundred dollars on it. U-Lease asks only for a security deposit, which you can pay by debit card, cash, credit card, or Interac e-Transfer — whatever’s convenient for you. A credit card is never mandatory. 4. That’s really it — insurance is included

Your rental vehicle is covered by automobile insurance as required by Québec law, so you don’t need to bring your own policy just to drive off the lot. It’s still smart to check whether your existing car insurance or a credit card you own offers additional coverage — but you won’t be turned away without it.

A few extra tips for visitors and newcomers

• Bring a piece of government ID (such as your passport) along with your licence.
• If you’re staying a while, or your licence isn’t in French or English, get an International Driving Permit before you travel. (CAA-Québec explains how they work.)
• Remember the six-month rule: after six consecutive months in Québec, you’ll need an IDP or a Québec licence to keep driving.
