You need a car, but you do not have a credit card. Maybe you are new to Canada, maybe you are a student, maybe you simply prefer to pay with debit or cash. At most rental counters in Montréal, that is where the conversation ends. At U-Lease, that is where it starts.
Traditional rental companies use the credit card as their safety net. When you pick up the vehicle, they typically place a temporary hold on the card for the deposit. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains how these merchant holds work: the amount is frozen on your card and reduces your available credit until the hold is released.
Trying to get around it with a prepaid card rarely works. According to the FCAC page on prepaid cards, car rental agencies are among the merchants that may put temporary holds on card funds or decline the card entirely. And debit acceptance varies from company to company, often with extra conditions.
The result: if you do not have a credit card in your name, with enough available credit for the hold, renting a car in Montréal can feel impossible. It is not.
We built our process around a simple idea: a credit card is one way to guarantee a rental, not the only way. Here is all it takes:
Drivers 18 and over are welcome, which is rare in this industry. Our team in Montréal-Nord serves all of Greater Montréal, including Longueuil, Brossard and LaSalle.
Every week we hand keys to people the big counters turned away:
No credit card does not mean no rules. To rent with us you need a valid driver's licence, to be 18 or older, and a refundable deposit paid in cash or by Interac e-Transfer. That is it. If you need the vehicle for a longer stretch, ask us about monthly rentals with renewable agreements. We compared them to traditional leasing in this guide.
Can I really rent a car in Montréal with no credit card at all?
Yes. At U-Lease you can secure your rental with a deposit paid in cash or by Interac e-Transfer. We do not require a credit card or a credit check.
Do you accept debit or Interac e-Transfer?
Yes. Interac e-Transfer and cash are our standard payment options for the deposit and the rental.
Will you freeze money on my card like other companies?
No card, no hold. Your deposit is a clear, agreed amount, returned according to your rental agreement, not an open-ended freeze on a credit limit.
What is the minimum age to rent?
18 years old. Bring your valid driver's licence and your deposit and you are ready to go.
